Art for Juveniles at St Andrews Bangkok – How Creativity Transforms Rehabilitation and Learning

Written by Khroo Third, Learning Support Teacher / Early Years & Key Stage 1 Learning Support Coordinator

At St Andrews International School Bangkok, we are proud to highlight the success of Art for Juveniles, a groundbreaking initiative that harnesses the power of art therapy, creative learning, and mentorship to support young individuals. Led by Mr Tim, Head of Art at the High School, and the High School Art Department, with invaluable support from Ms Amy, Director of Whole School Counselling and Wellbeing and the Counselling team, this initiative was meticulously coordinated by Dr Sarinthorn, School Director and Consultant to the Whole School SEN Programme; Khun Sirawut, Business Manager; and the High School Estates team, to create a truly transformative experience.

A special thank you goes to the judges and associate judges who attended, observed, and shared their expertise, recognising the dedication and generosity of the STA team. Although privacy and PDPA regulations prevent us from sharing images, those who attended witnessed firsthand the joy, engagement, and meaningful connections this programme fostered among participants.

Using art as a rehabilitation tool for young people

The Art for Juveniles programme was designed to provide an enriching, art-based rehabilitation experience for young individuals involved in minor legal cases. While the Central Juvenile and Family Court in Thailand offers a range of rehabilitation programmes—including career training, emotional support, and counselling—there has been a clear gap in art-focused initiatives.

Recognising the need for creative expression in youth rehabilitation, Judge Aphinya shared that many of these young individuals lack hobbies or positive pastimes, yet some have expressed a strong interest in learning how to draw and develop artistic skills. Art for Juveniles offers a unique opportunity for STA students and teachers to serve as mentors and role models, inspiring these young people while demonstrating the benefits of art therapy, self-expression, and creativity.

A hands-on learning experience at the Central Juvenile and Family Court

The event, held on Wednesday, 5th February 2025, took place at the Central Juvenile and Family Court in Chatuchak, Bangkok, welcoming 20 young participants aged 15–18 years. Additional support was provided by Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Education students and individual volunteers, further strengthening the programme’s impact.

By engaging in hands-on creative activities, participants developed artistic skills, problem-solving abilities, and emotional awareness, all while experiencing the therapeutic benefits of artistic expression. The structured yet supportive learning environment allowed them to explore self-reflection, collaboration, and personal growth in a way that traditional rehabilitation programmes may not always provide.

The power of community support and future growth

The Central Juvenile and Family Court in Bangkok continues to support this collaboration, ensuring the programme aligns with legal and logistical requirements while remaining a valuable initiative for youth rehabilitation in Thailand. While there are venue restrictions and budget limitations, these challenges are being managed carefully to sustain and expand the programme in the future. By integrating art education, youth mentorship, and community engagement, Art for Juveniles serves as a model for creative rehabilitation programmes that encourage self-discovery, discipline, and new opportunities for young individuals.

A lasting impact through art and mentorship

At St Andrews International School Bangkok, we believe that learning extends beyond the classroom. Initiatives like Art for Juveniles demonstrate the power of education, creativity, and empathy, reinforcing the school’s commitment to holistic development and social responsibility. We are incredibly proud of our students, teachers, and volunteers for their dedication to making a difference through art and education. Their efforts not only inspire young individuals to develop new skills but also promote positive change through creativity and mentorship.

This is just the beginning of what we hope will be an ongoing journey of supporting youth through art, education, and compassionate guidance. We look forward to seeing how this initiative continues to grow and impact lives.
