Bangkok Community Theatre; The Emperor’s New Clothes

Bangkok Community Theatre (BCT) is a voluntary, non-profit organisation comprising people of many nationalities who work together to produce English language plays for the local community. BCT was founded in 1972 when the two existing drama groups (each originating in the late ’50s) decided to pool their resources and form one organisation.

BCT generally stages 3 to 4 productions a year. They take place at different venues in Bangkok including The DoubleTree by Hilton Sukhumvit on Soi 26, The Alliance Francaise, Creative Industries and Blue Box studios. BCT sometimes stages shows that require child performers (e.g., the musical Annie) and occasionally puts on interactive fairytale plays or pantomimes performed by adults for an audience of young children (e.g., The Emperor’s New Clothes, Pinocchio, Jack and The Beanstalk, Snow White and more).

BANGKOK COMMUNITY THEATRE IS BACK THIS JANUARY WITH THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES!

Bangkok community theatre

Bangkok Community Theatre (BCT) will be back onstage this month just in time for Chinese New Year with a delightful, interactive fairytale production for children 4 to 9 years old: The Emperor’s New Clothes. A small multi-national ensemble cast of five performers plus a musician will bring this tale to life on stage at Baan Rim Naam, a breezy, open-air restaurant down by the river in Chinatown at 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, January 29 & 30, 2022.

Although the play is specially designed for children 4 to 9 years old, parents will also enjoy this unique type of live theatre which stimulates the imagination and involves the audience in the action throughout. The play includes some elements of the well-known British panto; however, it is a small, intimate, participatory production where the audience members are called up on repeatedly to solve problems and to help the characters make their way through the story.

Families are invited to come early to make a simple craft provided by Bangkok Patana School; the children can use the craft to participate in the show (craft is already included in the ticket price.) The ticket also includes a small snack from the venue; however, families are also encouraged to make a day of it by arriving early to eat lunch before the 1:30pm show or staying late to eat supper after the 4pm show to enjoy the delicious family-friendly menu provided by Baan Rim Naam.  What’s more, children are encouraged to come dressed in costume to add to the fun.

To safeguard everyone, the audience is asked to remain masked throughout the performance and the actors will take ATK tests the Monday before and again the day before the show. Tickets may be purchased at the link below where you will also find a comprehensive list of FAQs.
