Early Years at Brighton College Bangkok

At Brighton College Bangkok, the Early Years department (Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception) consists of a team of outstanding practitioners and brings a wealth of teaching experience, from the UK and overseas. Collectively we have been fortunate to have taught thousands of children from every corner of the world. Our teachers truly understand the importance of the Early Years and the need to lay strong foundations for the years ahead. As a team, we share a common desire and passion to provide a safe and secure learning environment where children are curious, confident and kind, and able to become the very best version of themselves.

At Brighton, we follow the most recent British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. A curriculum which consists of seven areas of learning; Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. In addition, our youngest children also experience many specialist lessons such as Thai, Mandarin, PE, Swimming, Music, Art and Computing. However, most importantly, we believe our curriculum begins and ends with the child. Our teachers fully appreciate that children learn at different levels and in different ways. Therefore we continue to adapt and deliver a curriculum which is constantly evolving to meet the ever growing needs and interests of the children within our care. Teachers, teaching and learning assistants, and nannies use children’s ideas and thoughts to create meaningful provisions, invitations and interactions, which facilitate their learning, deepen their knowledge of the world around them, and in turn allow them to flourish in all areas of the curriculum.

Our Early Years practice is inspired by both the Reggio Emilia philosophy and The Curiosity Approach. These practises promote the importance of creating learning environments, which provoke children’s curiosity and exploration, as well as inviting further questioning. As such, we truly believe that our environment is of utmost importance and is therefore fundamental to the learning process and development of our youngest pupils. Classrooms and shared spaces are designed to be welcoming and aesthetically pleasing, with the use of warm lighting, cosy corners and soft-furnishings to create a calm and purposeful learning space. In addition, teachers draw inspiration from the community, cultures and nature surrounding them, filling their classroom with real-life, natural materials from musical instruments to seashells. Such natural, open-ended resources allow children to lead their play and elevate their learning rather than being restricted and limited by purely conventional toys.

In accordance with the Reggio Emilia approach, we too define our learning environment as the “third teacher”. A space carefully designed and resourced to encourage children to build relationships, pursue interests, collaborate and problem solve through exploration and open-ended play. Such a flexible and organic approach to learning allows children the freedom to explore new objects, concepts or interests independently and the teacher to be more responsive to the needs of individuals in their class.
