Our English Language Learner (ELL) program is designed to help students develop the language skills, confidence, and academic foundations they need to thrive in an international learning environment.
Whether students are new to English or transitioning from another educational system, they receive personalized support while remaining connected to their peers, teachers, and the broader school community. It is true that our goal is to teach English—but it’s also to help every student feel capable, included, validated, and ready to succeed.

What is the English Language Learner (ELL) Program?
The English Language Learner (ELL) program provides additional language support for students who are still developing English proficiency.
At XCL ASB Sukhumvit, ELL students receive targeted instruction from specialized English language teachers who work closely with classroom teachers to ensure students can access grade-level learning while strengthening their language skills. The program focuses on helping students develop:
- Reading comprehension
- Academic writing
- Speaking confidence
- Listening skills
- Subject-specific vocabulary
- Classroom communication
- Independent learning strategies
The ultimate goal is for students to achieve full English proficiency and confidently participate in mainstream classes without additional language support.
Learning English From Day One
One of the biggest misconceptions about language support programs is that students are separated from the rest of the school community.
At XCL ASB Sukhumvit, students remain active participants in school life while receiving the additional support they need. They learn alongside classmates from more than 40 nationalities, participate in school events, build friendships, and develop confidence through authentic daily interactions.
Language development happens most effectively when students feel safe and included. That is why creating a strong sense of belonging is just as important as building academic skills.
Our teachers intentionally foster classroom environments where students are encouraged to ask questions, take risks, and celebrate progress at every stage of their learning journey. This philosophy extends across our Early Years, Elementary, Middle School, and High School programs.
Personalized Learning & Support
At XCL ASB, we understand that no two language learners are the same. Some students may need support with conversational English, while others require assistance with academic writing, reading comprehension, or subject-specific vocabulary. Because of this, our ELL teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers to identify each student’s needs and create individualized pathways for growth.
Students are continually monitored and assessed so support can evolve as their skills develop. This ensures they are appropriately challenged while maintaining confidence and momentum. The emphasis is always on progress, not perfection.
As students gain proficiency, they gradually become more independent learners who can fully engage with grade-level expectations across subjects.
English Language Learners (ELL) at XCL ASB Sukhumvit
XCL ASB Sukhumvit offers ELL for students all the way from Grades 1 through 12, giving learners at all levels the opportunity to enhance their English skills throughout their educational journey.
Elementary School
The ELL program for elementary students combines push-in and pull-out services tailored to their proficiency levels. Level 1 students are pulled out of ELA classes for targeted instruction. Non-Thai students also take English as their world-language, reinforcing content in science and social studies. ELL teachers provide push-in support for these subjects, ensuring students receive language assistance while staying engaged with the core curriculum.
ELL students in elementary school must demonstrate adequate vocabulary and speaking skills to communicate effectively in academic contexts as well as have a reading level no more than two grade levels behind the expected standard to exit the ELL program and return to mainstream classes.
Middle School
The ELL program in middle school uses a sheltered immersion model to help students build language proficiency for transitioning into mainstream classes. Progress is tracked through WDA levels, MAP scores, classwork, grades, and teacher observations.
ELL students attend homeroom, advisory, Math, PE, and electives with their peers while gradually joining core academic classes as their English improves. During core subjects, ELL teachers and mainstream teachers collaborate to offer targeted support to ELL students to develop necessary skills and vocabulary.
Once students exit the ELL program, they can begin learning an additional language. Until then, ELL students are required to take English as a World Language, with targeted grammar, reading, and vocabulary support based on proficiency levels.
High School
The ELL program is available for high school students in Grades 9-12 as English proficiency is expected at this level.
At high school level, a combination of push-in and pull-out strategies are implemented to address the student’s academic needs. Some students may need additional academic language support through the World English Language program while receiving pull-out support for English Language Arts. To exit the ELL program and assimilate back into mainstream classes, students must demonstrate they’ve mastered the language, showing fluency in vocabulary, speaking, and consistent performance in class.
High school students may also concurrently take AP classes offered by XCL ASB Sukhumvit if their teachers and advisors deem fit. There have certainly been cases of students in ELL who have yet to achieve mainstream English language fluency but have been deemed fit to take advanced Math pathways from our extensive offering of 23 AP options and counting.
Beyond ELL: Continued Native Language Support
Language development does not stop once students exit the ELL program. A unique aspect of support at XCL ASB Sukhumvit is our continued focus on multilingual learners through native language support opportunities after students transition out of ELL.
This approach recognizes an important truth: maintaining and strengthening a student’s home language can support long-term academic success, cultural identity, and cognitive development.
At XCL ASB Sukhumvit, at least 5 World Languages are offered each year at both the acquisitional level and the native level—Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, and as for ELL students, English as a World Language.
ELL also extends into ASB PLUS, our WASC-accredited and BSA-affiliated full boarding program, where English language support tutors assist boarders with language acquisition and extracurricular tutorials well after school ends, with dedicated time each week allotted to helping non-native speakers at our boarding house excel further in their English language journey.
Rather than viewing language learning as replacing one language with another, we encourage students to become confident multilingual communicators who can succeed in an increasingly global world. For internationally mobile families, this provides an additional layer of support that helps students continue developing both their English proficiency and their connection to their native language.
