Rising Star Dance Studio’s “The Sleeping Beauty Ballet”

Rising Star Dance Studio, one of Bangkok’s premier centers for ballet, will present the ballet Sleeping Beauty on June 1st and 2nd 2019 at the M Theater on New Petchburi Road. There will also be a dress rehearsal/press performance on May 30th at 6 pm. Partial proceeds from the performances will benefit the Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand.

Since its premiere in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, attended by Empress Alexandra, Sleeping Beauty has become one of the favorites of every classical ballet company. Mariinsky Ballet’s director Marius Petipa commissioned the musical score written by Tchaikovsky and based on the Charles Perrault fairy tale.

Rising Star Dance Studio’s annual full-length ballet performances have been an annual highlight for local audiences, old and young alike, since 1995. Productions are directed and choreographed by Rising Star’s director, Fay Pansringarm, who brings her many years of experience as a dancer, director, and choreographer in New York City.  This year’s performance incorporates Petipa’s original choreography and aspects of Frederick Ashton’s version for the Royal Ballet in London.

Maho Mashimo, a former Rising Star student, stars as Aurora. Miss Mashimo trained at the Rock School, one of America’s foremost elite ballet academies. She has performed as a soloist with the San Diego Ballet Company and now performs in Nagoya, Japan. The Prince will be danced by Anurak Ngamta, Thailand’s foremost male ballet dancer and lead dancer in musicals and dance productions in Malaysia, Japan, and Thailand. He delighted Thai audiences nationwide with his performance of “Heart and Soul” on “Thailand’s Got Talent.”

Rising Star’s associate director Yuko Nakamura, who herself danced the lead role in the 2005 production, imparts her exquisite artistry and years of experience mentoring this year’s dancers. Miss Nakamura previously trained and performed with the San Francisco Ballet Company.

Following tradition, the evil fairy Carabosse is performed by a male dancer Padparascha Kaewploy (professor at Rajabhat Suan Sunandha University who danced in Italy’s Teatro Oplas). Also dancing are almost 80 students of Rising Star Dance Studio, ages 4 to adult, from over 20 nationalities. They are joined by several of the new generation of dancers from Chulalongkorn University’s dance department.

Rising Star Dance Studio has been training and entertaining Bangkok residents of all ages and nationalities in the art of ballet since 1995.

Performances on June 1stand 2nd start at 2:30 pm and run two acts, totaling approximately 110 minutes, plus a 20-minute intermission.
