Lumpini Park is Bangkok’s most celebrated park. Dating back to the 1920s, the 360-rai (0.58 square kilometres) park was originally conceived as an exhibition centre for Thai crafts and flower displays. Today, it is a sanctuary for nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts. The park offers a host of recreational activities, from jogging, cycling and aerobics to tai chi, yoga and ballroom dancing. Lumpini Park is sectioned into various zones, with striking architectural features, a range of indigenous flora and a man-made lake.
The park is lovely for children (and adults) of all ages. Shaded walkways and paths around the perimeter of the park are perfect for walking, running and biking. Paddleboats with life jackets are available for hire, and children will enjoy cruising by the monitor lizards, some the size of small alligators, lazing on the banks of the lake. There are two large playgrounds with sand pits. Many sheltered niches offer cooler spots for picnicking or rest.
