Khao San Road was aptly named “the center of the backpacking universe” in the famous novel, The Beach. It is the traveler’s hub of South-East Asia, packed with bars, restaurants, cheap hostels, eclectic markets stalls and faces from every corner of the earth.
Geared solely towards backpackers, it hosts a variety of street vendors selling everything from pad Thai noodles, to Chang t-shirts and wooden frogs that make a convincing sound. The markets are bursting with fun, tacky and useful things, and now an increasing variety of independent designer clothes. Khaosan Road also has several of Bangkok’s best second-hand English bookshops, due to the transient flow of tourists.
Mid to older aged children will love the affordable variety of knock off fashion and pirated music, sandals, sunglasses, swimwear and knick knack goods. There are also shop fronts along the street selling souvenirs and handicrafts, tailors and tour booking agents. Khaosan Road is also known for the street-side vendors dressed in Northern Hill Tribe clothing and selling hand-made textiles and handicrafts from up North.
This is not the market for an authentic Thai experience, but a perfect morning out to purchase some cheap fashion and accessories, ride a tuk tuk or eat some local street food.
