Located in Nakorn Pathom Province, Phra Pathom Chedi (meaning ‘Holy Stupa’), at a height of 127 metres, is the tallest stupa in the world. Archaeological findings referencing a stupa at this location date back to the 4th century. In the 11th century, it was overbuilt with a Khmer-style prang, which subsequently fell into ruin. King Rama IV later ordered the building of a new and more magnificent stupa at the site. After 17 years, Phra Pathom Chedi was completed in 1870. Relics from the Buddha, brought to Thailand from India, are enshrined in the structure. The Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Museum boasts an interesting display of artefacts found during excavations in Nakhon Pathom.
Phra Pathom Chedi is suitable for children. They will enjoy exploring the base, walking through the courtyard to look at various Buddha images in different poses, and ringing a number of bells set up for visitors. Next to the stupa is a large market with many food stalls offering all kinds of Thai food; a favourite with kids is the ‘kung fu’ ice cream man who started the trend of flipping ice cream up into the air.
