Khao Kheow Open Zoo is the only official open zoo in Thailand raising 8,000 animals of more than 300 types in an area of almost 2,000 acres in the Khao Kheow – Khao Chom Poo Wildlife Conservation Area. It plays an important role in the conservation and research of animals and is one of the biggest tiger centres in the Asia Pacific area. The zoo features an African savannah, where animals such as giraffes, zebras, ostriches, rhinoceros, springboks, oryxs, impalas and bestbok live together, surrounded by a dry ditch. Visitors can see and feed the animals up close, or drive through the Eld’s Deer Park with their own vehicle or Auto Tram, courtesy of the zoo. Two acres in size, the walk-through aviary is an open area of the zoo highlighted by waterfalls, streams, ponds and a variety of plant life. It contains over 80 different kinds of birds including teals, storks, pheasants, egrets, herons and stonechats. There is also a selection of reptiles and small mammals such as the Indochinese tiger, visited by experts all over the world for the zoo’s advancement in conservation. Children can further explore the Butterfly garden, which spans over an acre and connects with the Khao Kheow sanctuary and Khao Chum Puh. Young children will thoroughly enjoy the half hour shows of small, friendly animals, including the cunning macau, pelicans, otters and falcons. The zoo also offers a special ‘After Dark’ adventure, where visitors journey into the jungle in moonlight. Bookings are essential.
