Description

Built during the reign of King Rama III, Wat Bowonniwetwihan, or Wat Bowon for short, is an important royal Buddhist temple that has been under the patronage of the Chakri dynasty. The temple, whose abbot is the kingdom’s Supreme Patriarch, houses the famous Sukhothai-era bronze Phra Phuttha Chinnasee Buddha image from Phitsanulok and Phra Suwannakhet from Phetchaburi – both are surrounded by unusual murals. The grounds also house a large stupa, several other famous Buddha images, and Vihara Keng, a Chinese-style structure decorated with murals of scenes from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, among other sacred structures, art pieces and historic treasures.

Wat Bowon is suitable for children, who will enjoy exploring the grounds and learning about the different influences (Western, Chinese, Hindu and Thai) in the temple’s various works of art and architecture.
