Built in 1941 by the then military government to commemorate a 1940 campaign against the French in Indochina, the Victory Monument is an obelisk designed in the shape of five bayonets clasped together. It is flanked by five statues representing the army, navy, air force, police and civilian bureaucracy. Today the monument primarily serves as a landmark in the middle of a very busy traffic circle and a transportation hub for commuters. Given the traffic chaos in the area, it is difficult to get up close to the monument, which can also be viewed from the elevated walkways. The Victory Monument is worth a look if you are in the area. Children may be interested in its military theme.
