The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) is a mid-town facility for the contemporary arts known for its vast, open-air architectural design. It serves as a meeting place for artists, and a way to provide cultural programmes for the community giving importance to cultural continuity from past to contemporary. BACC aims to open new grounds for cultural dialogue, networking, and create new cultural resources from both the public and the private sectors. It is intended as a venue for cultural exchange in terms of content, curatorial and cultural management, giving Bangkok an operational base on the international art scene.
The centre runs programmes for art, music, theatre, film and design, and there are also cultural and educational events that take place in a friendly and recreational atmosphere. The main gallery, floor 7 – 9, is more than 3,500sqm and houses major and special exhibitions year round. Floor 1 – 6 accommodates a range of retail outlets, including art, books, jewelry, handicrafts, toys and fashion. It is not uncommon to see students and local artists sketching on site, or selling their home made wares in market stall setups.
Children will love walking up the circular ramp and stairway to floor 7, particularly young children who can hide and play in the architectural nooks. The gallery space is best suited to older children who can understand and appreciate the exhibition information, labeled clearly in English. On your way in or out of the Centre, be sure to grab a coffee from the quaint café on ground floor, who specialize in traditional drip espresso.
