Staying Cool with Sub Zero Ice Skate Club

When the kids decided it was time to try their hand at ice skating I started to look around for options, ice skating isn’t something you necessarily think of living in the tropical heat of Bangkok! Being born and bread in Asia the kids opportunities to ice skate were never really there but luckily Bangkok is a city that offers everything and we soon found there is actually quite a choice.

About Sub Zero

We chose Sub Zero ice skating which is situated on the 9th floor of the Co-Operative building, adjacent to Ekkamai BTS station so very conveniently situated. It’s in the same building as the Major Cineplex and Blue O Bowling so the whole area is a one-stop shop for kids entertainment.

From the minute you walk in you feel the temperature drop, while it’s not exactly sub zero I would recommend taking a sweatshirt as going from 35 degrees to 20 you do feel the drop in temperature. Some of the smaller kids were skating in jackets and gloves, although I feel that was more to protect them against bumps and scrapes than the cold!

There’s a small counter where you can get get a locker for a 50b charge and we opted to put our shoes in there rather than just leaving them in the shoe racks provided. If you have forgotten to bring your own socks they do sell them at the skate counter but are very clear than you cannot skate without socks, for hygiene reasons.

The skates themselves are a mixture of old and new so it really depends on your size and how busy they are; as to what you get. They are more than happy to help the kids secure the fastenings on the boots and can organise small trolleys for them to push around to help with their balance. The trolleys are small penguins or polar bears with small seats attached, so they can be used both for balance and pushing smaller kids (and larger) around and having fun!

There are two ice skating rinks in the Ekkamai branch, the larger for public use and the smaller is the skate club area. Here, you can book lessons for your kids to be taught how to ice skate, professional figure skating opportunities and they even run and train an ice hockey team!

There is a small cafe at the side of the main rink selling a limited selection of snacks and soft drinks but as there is a better selection outside, we chose to wait and find something in the mall area.

What We Loved Most About Sub Zero

We were there close to Chinese New Year so the rink itself was decorated with Chinese style gates and cherry blossom trees it was all very festive. Apparently the themes around the rink change regularly, moving from hearts at Valentine, flowers at Songkran and a Halloween on-ice party later in October.

The kids really enjoyed the ice skating, we were there for nearly 2 hours and they have a great DJ who keeps things lively. It was nice to see a few of the more experienced skate staff on the ice to help out with the little ones and make sure the older kids don’t skate too fast and generally don’t mess around and compromise anyone’s safety.

If you really want to do something different with the kids this is a nice change, keeps them active and for a few hours it’s nice to feel the chill and forget the way above zero temperatures outside.

Things To Consider If You Go

Sub Zero have different branches around Bangkok and I’m glad we chose Ekkamai as it wasn’t too busy and really conveniently located. If you want a fun experience this is for you, if you are however an experienced skater looking for a large rink to show off your talents this isn’t for you and I would visit one of the larger rinks.
