This past weekend marked the beginning of Bangkok’s 16th International Festival of Dance and Music, an annual event that showcases renowned international productions, encompassing music, dance, performance art, and more. From this year’s compelling line-up, below are our picks for mesmerizing entertainment and cultural experiences for the whole family.
Cirque Eclipse (China)
Performance dates: Friday, 19 September, 7.30pm; Saturday, 20 September, 7.30pm; and Sunday, 21 September, 2.30pm
‘Cirque Eclipse’ is a new choreographed show by the multiple award-winning China National Acrobatic Troupe, one of China’s most acclaimed troupes. The show combines stunning acrobatics, including astounding contortionist moves, with dance and drama; it is also a celebration of the troupe’s 55th anniversary.
Snow White (France)
Performance date: Wednesday, 24 September, 7.30pm
Ballet Preljocaj, a leading ballet company from France, performs a full-length ballet based on the contemporary retelling of Snow White (‘Blanche Neige’). With music by Gustav Mahler and art direction/choreography by Angelin Preljocaj, this show also features massive sets, 26 talented dancers, and costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier.
The Jive Aces (United Kingdom)
Performance date: Friday, 26 September, 7.30pm
The UK’s top jive and swing band, as well as the stars of Britain’s Got Talent, The Jive Aces feature high energy jump jive music, where swing meets rock and roll, and spectacular stage shows. This fun six-piece group will perform their own renditions of popular songs, as well as their own hit singles.
ABBA Show (Sweden)
Performance dates: Tuesday, 30 September, 7.30pm; and Wednesday, 1 October, 7.30pm
The Arrival from Sweden puts together a true ABBA experience, with ABBA’s original musicians, 70s-inspired costumes, and of course, the catchy tunes! Since its inception in 1995, this troupe of musicians and singers has toured over 50 nations and appeared in TV and radio shows all over the world.
Taj Express (India)
Performance dates: Saturday, 11 October, 7.30pm; and Sunday, 12 October, 2.30pm
Directed and choreographed by Shruti Merchant, ‘Taj Express’ marries the new India’s pop and Bollywood culture with deep-rooted traditions. With over 2,000 extravagant costumes and energized music, the show brings all the flavours and elements of a Bollywood movie to the stage in a spectacular production.
