Your Name: Yannick Margulies
Job Title: BKK Skating School Director
What is your nationality and background?
I was born in Paris where I grew up until attending middle school in La Rochelle, then University in Bordeaux, Aix-en-Provence. After I graduated, I moved to Ireland. I then lived in Sydney and London for a while and arrived in Bangkok almost 10 years ago; now I’m 32 and already feeling old.
What is your profession?
Well, I work mostly from home, so I consider myself as a stay-at home dad, and my first job (and the hardest) is taking care of my 3 very cute and naughty kids.
I’m also the Founder and Director of Bkk Skating School, following my passion for inline skating. I manage an amazing team of professional coaches who teach students how to rollerblade, from beginners to skate park Olympic athletes, through afterschool progammes in international schools, weekend classes and full day camps.
I also founded Learn&Play which is a French and English tutoring school, committing ourselves to each student for maximum progress with open communication between their parents and school teachers. We found this is essential to reach desired learning outcomes and the development of each student, using our personalized approach to teaching and learning.
What are the key skills and responsibilities of this role?
I have created an amazing team of inline skating coaches and I take care of them, making sure they are well trained, well paid, happy going to work. This incredible dream team is made of our head coach, 3-time world champion from Australia and members of the Thai national skating team. That’s why our school is so different from the others; our coaches are Inline skating professionals who don’t teach only the basics but have the knowledge and skills to push students to the highest level.
I also communicate a lot with our partner schools, students and parents.
How did you get involved in your profession?
I have been teaching French for many years, using a Learn & Play strategy to keep children engaged. As my passion for teaching and learning grew, I saw the potential to move forward and open to more students. No longer confined to a classroom and four walls, I am able to create fun learning experiences for a broader range of students and curriculums. This is how I began my business and started developing afterschool activities for international schools in Bangkok. My newest project and lifelong passion is rollerblading, which I’ve been doing since I was 10 years old. My dream is to unify both my passion and profession by creating a thriving inline skate community through BKK Skating School.
How does your role enhance the wellbeing or experience of children?
Inline skating or rollerblading as you want to call it is much more than a sport, it’s a feeling, it’s a lifestyle. I’ve found that after only one or two lessons most children are able to find their balance and can skate on their own. That’s when students fall in love with the sport and gain confidence to learn more. Skating helps develop autonomy in children, discovering their strengths and limitations, taking learning into their own hands.
Inline skating helps children keep fit while having fun, encouraging fast decision making and leadership skills. There are many physical and health benefits including;increased endurance & body strength, improved coordination, balance, reflexes and flexibility.
As students master the art, movement becomes natural, helping to clear the mind and relieve stress. Skating is simply great fun!
What challenges do your face in this role?
To make our vision a reality. We focus on personalized training to the highest levels. What we offer is unique and creating awareness amongst the public is challenging.
What do you hope to achieve within your industry?
I want to promote rollerblading and all “street” extreme sports (skateboard, scooter, bmx), to make our programmes accessible to every child.
Who or what inspires you?
All of our coaches inspire me every day. Coach CJ Wellsmore is amazing with children, and he has an incredible charisma where all the students look up to him as a role model. Coach Worapoj “Note”Boonnim is a ninja on wheels and the kindest person. Coach Mod is meticulous and methodical, he only expects the best from his students. Coach Yok is exceptionally patient and excellent with beginners. Coach Stelios is super friendly, accessible and hard working.
