Bangkok Places: 5 Things to Do in Sukhumvit 31

Sukhumvit 31 might often be associated with shopping malls, restaurants and high-rise hotels. But there’s also a surprisingly varied array of family-friendly activities waiting to be discovered. Here are five destinations in the area we recommend checking out.

1. Dance Centre School of Performing Arts

Since launching in 1985, Dance Centre School of Performing Arts has become the leading ballet and contemporary dance academy in Thailand. Tuition quality is high and the teachers are all working industry professionals. A varied programme of classical and contemporary classes also cater to kids and include everything from hip-hop and street dance to jazz and a children’s ballet class. Attend a “drop in class” at 600 baht for 1 hour or commit to a 12-week course starting from 5,990 baht.

2. Attic Studios

Whether you want to nurture their artistic spark, or discourage them from drawing on your bedroom walls, this spacious art studio is just the ticket. Children aged 5 years and up can attend specialist classes delivered by working artists, and creativity gets to flourish with both painting and drawing sessions that encompass a range of media including acrylic, mosaic, pastel, oil and charcoal. You can also book an “Arty Party” – ideal for themed birthdays if you’ve got an enthusiastic little artist on your hands.

3. Nanmeebooks House

Thailand’s leading publishing house, Nanmeebooks House has gained a reputation for its strong educational focus in Thailand. Along with an extensive range of reference books and a reading club, this outlet on Sukhumvit also has its own child-friendly science center, called the “Little Scientists’ House”. Kids get to carry out various hands-on scientific experiments at 39 different stations, aiding their critical thinking, teamwork, and sense of curiosity within an early-learning programme.

4. Bangkok Batting Center

At Bangkok Batting Center, you get to practice your baseball skills, let off some steam and get in a pretty great workout all at the same time. There are six different batting cages, each with an automatic pitcher that launches the ball at a specific speed ranging from 80 to 130 km/h. Build confidence at slower speeds, then swing for the fences in one of the more advanced cages. You can pay 100 baht per 25 balls or opt for promotional deals like the “All You Can Bat” Weekday Promotion with 1 hour batting for 1,000 baht.

5. Dinosaur Planet

At this prehistoric-themed amusement park, kids get to go back in time to an age when Tyrannosaurus rex stalked the land and the skies were filled with giant pterodactyl. The whole park is split into various zones that feature interactive games, exhibits, rides and a live show. Pit your reactions and brain power against the formidable velociraptor at RAPTOR X-TREME, watch dinos do battle in a 4D Simulator at 4D Deep World, and give little palaeontologists in the making the chance to dig up fossils over at Dino Farm.
