6 Foods that Kids Love (That are Good for Them Too!)

Get back to the basics of eating well with these 6 palatable foods, which are packed with the nutrients school-aged children need for their growing bodies and brains.

Greek Yogurt – Containing healthy bacteria that strengthen the immune system and aid digestion, Greek yogurt also offers two to three times the amount of protein (and less sugar) than regular yogurt. Served plain with a drizzle of honey or maple syrup or with fresh fruit, you’ve got an easy and nutritious breakfast or afternoon snack.

Salmon – A superfood packed with heart-healthy omega-3s and brain-boosting fish oils, salmon can be prepared in a variety of ways: grilled, sautéed, poached or baked in the oven – with or without marinades. It also tastes great in burgers and tangy Thai-style salads. Wild caught salmon contains more omega-3s and are lower in mercury.

Eggs – Having an egg each day provides a great source of protein; vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium; and choline, an important compound for brain function and heart health. For more variety, instead of serving an egg on its own, try making French toast for breakfast or cook it in dishes such as fried rice, noodles, and egg drop soup for lunch or dinner.

Oats – Fibre-rich whole grains, such as oats, offer several benefits – they counter constipation, help improve memory, and provide kids with a steady stream of energy. Opt for oatmeal over cereal for breakfast, or enjoy a yummy all-natural granola mix comprising oats, pecan, almonds, flour, coconut and maple syrup.

Beef – Lean beef is one of the best-absorbed sources of iron and zinc, which are needed for good cognitive function. Also, adding even as little as one ounce of beef per day can boost the body’s ability to absorb iron from other sources. Angus burger, steak, beef lasagne, beef and onion pie, kebabs, sirloin stir-fry, or meatballs, anyone?

Nuts – Loaded with healthy fats, which kids need for growth and development, nuts offer a variety of additional health benefits. Many children enjoy calcium-rich almonds, heart-healthy walnuts, and pistachios, which helps maintain vision. Serve the nuts raw, added to trail mix, or in granola and baked goods.
