Spreading over a 100-metre length, the Mae Klong Railway Market (‘Talad Hoop Rom’ or ‘Umbrella Closing Market’) is an interesting attraction because it is literally located atop working rail tracks of the Mae Klong-Ban Laem railway line, running from and to Mahachai and Mae Klong. Preceded by a warning bell, a train bisects the market several times a day. Selling seafood, veggies, fruits, dried food, meats and more, vendors are perfectly calm about retracting their stall awnings and umbrellas, and slightly adjusting the placement of their goods to (just barely) accommodate the train. Once it passes, everything is restored, with goods replaced on the tracks.
Located in Samut Songkhram province, the market is 60 kilometres from Bangkok (roughly a 1.5-hour drive). Take Thonburi-Pak Tho route until the 63rd kilometre. Keep left and enter the paralleled elevated highway to the centre of Samut Songkhram. Drive past the first light. At the second light, turn right and cross over the railway to arrive at Mae Klong Railway Market. It operates from 6am to 6pm.
As of mid-2017, the train schedule is as follows:
Arrive at Mae Klong Station at 8.30am, 11.10am, 2.30pm and 5.40pm
Depart Mae Klong Station at 6.20am, 9am, 11.30am and 3.30pm
For another perspective (that’s also quite scenic and inexpensive), you can get to the market by train itself. From Wong Wian Yai Railway Station on the Thonburi side of Bangkok, get off at Mahachai Station (a 50-minute ride). Take a cross-river ferry to Tha Chalom Pier and catch the train from Ban Laem Station to Mae Klong Station, which is the last stop on the line.
The market is not far from Amphawa Floating Market, which can also be visited in the same day. It would be more convenient to get there by private car but transport options such as tuk tuks and taxis are also available to and from Amphawa and Mae Klong Station.
