Bangkok Places: 5 Things to Do in Ekamai

Ekamai (Sukhumvit soi 63) is a long street that connects Sukhumvit to Petchburi. It’s largely residential, but also features places of interest for families. Here are 5 fun things to do in the area.

1. Kidzoona/Molly Fantasy

This larger indoor play zone, located on the 5th floor of Gateway Ekamai Shopping Mall, is aimed primarily at 2-10 year olds. Older kids will love the arcade machines while young ones will find endless fun with the coin-operated rides and soft indoor play area – Kidzoona, which features an inflatable slide, trampoline, bouncy castle, ball pits, merry-go-round and even giant hamster wheels. There’s also a dedicated zone for babies and toddlers, as well as a faux town for pretend play.

2. Science Centre for Education and Bangkok Planetarium

The centre, located on Sukhumvit Road near the bus depot, includes four main buildings, most notably the Planetarium*, followed by the Natural Science building, Science Museum and Aquatic Life building. Young children will love the interactive displays, life-like dinosaurs, world of insects, play supermarket, pirate ship and large open areas for running around. The facilities are dated but the centre is always good for a couple hours of inexpensive playtime.

*Please note: The planetarium will be closed from May 2, 2015 onwards for major renovations; new opening date in January 2016.

3. Paron School of Art

Looking to nurture your children’s artistic side? In a funky studio above the Happiness Café (between Ekamai sois 11 and 13), Paron School of Art runs classes dedicated to helping young people develop their talent. Classes are structured in keeping with the British National Curriculum and designed to cater for a range of ages – from young children through to adolescents. Opened in 2014, the work of its promising students has already been recognised with a number of accolades including “Top in the world” at recent Cambridge examinations.

4. Sub Zero Ice Skating Rink

Practice your twirls or just zip around on the ice at this moderately-sized ice skating rink, located on the 9th floor of the Co-op supermarket building at the front of Ekamai (Sukhumvit-side). Skate rentals are available for children as young as 4 years old; props to help with balance and helmets are also provided for novice skaters. The background music can get loud but that doesn’t diminish the level of fun!

5. Playtime

This sprawling indoor activity centre in the Park Lane Mall is ideally suited for children between 2 to 6 years of age. The main attraction is a huge play-gym complete with a climbing frame, trampoline, zip line and tunnels. There’s also an additional play zone with a climbing wall and sand pit; soft ball combat zone; electric car course; separate play area for babies and toddlers; adults’ foot massage room; and great little arts and crafts corner.
